If you were to have asked me a few years ago if there were any books I didn’t read I would wholeheartedly said Romance. I would have never picked up a book that seemed like it had Romance as its main theme (and was an Adult book, because lets be honest I definitely read my fair share of YA Romance). I didn’t understand why anyone would read them and I had a very narrow view of what these books consisted of.
When I was taking my Reader’s Advisory class in my masters we had a project where we had to chose a genre that we never read and read three books from that genre. While I didn’t enjoy all of the books that I read I did find that I enjoyed some of them more than I thought I would, and one of them was even a Harlequin.
In the time since then I have noticed that my reading preferences have changed and now include a large amount of contemporary romance novels which I have really started to enjoy.
Why I love romance novels is that same as the reasoning for many people.
- It is a great escape from reality where many of the world’s troubles don’t exist
- I love love and I love reading about love stories and watching people come together
- I love knowing that everything is going to have a happy ending
Some of my favourite romance writers currently are:
- Jasmine Guillory
- Helen Hoang
- Christina Lauren
And for YA Romance I love:
- Sarah Dessen
- Jenny Han
- Nicola Yoon
- Becky Albertalli
It is fascinating to find yourself falling in love with a genre of books you always thought that you would hate. I have loved getting to read more of these books and I am now eagerly awaiting upcoming releases by these authors and can’t wait to find even more authors who I love.
What about you? Do you have any Romance suggestions for me? Or have you ever started to enjoy a genre of books that you always thought you would hate?
