Last year I shared some of the things that I was DIY-ing in the bathroom such as liquid soap, scented bath salts, and bubble bath which you can read about in my post here.
Today I am sharing some more DIY’s that I have been using. The sea salt spray I have been using for years, the dishwasher tabs I have been making for the past few months since I have lived in a place with a dishwasher, and the sugar scrub is something new.
Sea Salt Spray
I like using sea salt spray in my hair after washing it to give a bit more body and wave to my very straight hair. This recipe is easy to make and saves so much money buying sea salt sprays from a store. I am using the recipe from here.
You will need:
- 1-2 tsp sea salt
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 cup warm water
- A few drops of essential oils (optional)
Mix everything together in a container and the oil and salt will dissolve into the water. Add a few drops of essential oil if desired and then pour into a spray bottle. I just reuse a bottle from LUSH of the sea salt spray that I used to buy.
Dishwasher Pods
This is the first place that we have lived in our marriage with a dishwasher and I knew that I wanted to try making my own dishwasher pods. This recipe takes a little bit more work when squishing down the pods, but you can also just keep it as powder and not form into pods. I originally got my recipe from here
You will need:
- 1 Cup Baking Powder
- 1/4 Cup Citric Acid
- 1 Tbsp Liquid Dish Soap (you may need less depending on your brand)
Combine the three ingredients together in a bowl. The mixture will begin to expand some with the chemical reaction. Just keep in the bowl and measure out a spoonful if you would like to keep it loose. If you would like to make pods squish the powder into silicon ice cube molds. I find a pestle is a great size to push it down. You will need to continually squish the powder down every 5-10 minutes for about an hour as it will continue to expand. Then leave it in the molds overnight, remove from the molds and store ready to use. This recipe makes about 15 pods.
Sugar Scrub
Sugar scrubs are another product that I have been buying, but know that it is super easy to make your own. Today I am making one with brown sugar but there are tons of recipes out there with either brown or white sugar and you can add tons of different scents to them. I was inspired by this recipe here
You will need:
- 1 Cup Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Oil (I am using coconut oil)
- Vanilla
I am just making a vanilla scented one, but you can also add essential oils, or other extracts. You can mix these together in a container (I am just using a spare plastic food container) and store in the shower.
Making things yourself is fun, saves you money, and gives you the chance to make things the way you want to. Let me know if you make any of these recipes or if you have any other great DIY’s for me to try!
I’ve never thought of making my own dishwasher detergent, what a great idea!
